今回のハービー・マンはロックです。ローリング・ストーンズ、ビートルズ、デレク＆ドミノスなど、ロック・バンドの名曲をカバーしています。タイトルの"London Underground"は、R&Bテイスト溢れる名盤"Memphis Underground"にちなんだものだと思われます。
参加ミュージシャンは、ストーンズのMick Taylorをはじめとして、イギリスのロック系ミュージシャンが多数参加しています。なぜかジャズ・バイオリンの名手、ステファン・グラッペリも一曲弾いていたりします。
"Bitch","Layla"はどちらも八分を超える熱演。エレキ・ギターとフルートのソロがたっぷり楽しめます。マンも好調で、少しオーバーブロウ気味の切れの良い音で自在に駆け回っています。フルートでこのノリを出せるのはほんとに素晴らしい。
名曲"A Whiter Shade Of Pale","You Never Give Me Your Money"での、味のあるバラードプレイ、"Mellolow Yellow"での、グラッペリとマンの明るく爽やかな掛け合いも聴き所です。
変にジャズのエッセンスを加えずに、コテコテのロックビートで通したのがこのセッションの成功要因でしょう。ハービー・マン・サウンドが好きな方だけでなく、ロック好きにもお勧めのアルバムです。
